It’s no surprise to me that hundreds, possibly thousands of Irish teachers are again this September, left high and dry and unable to find full time work. One thousand new secondary teaching posts were promised in the Irish press in May. Unfortunately for the candidates who would not consider teaching England as they were going to hold out for these promised posts, it is now too late to secure a full time post for September. Uteach will have a hand full of posts to fill in the first two weeks of term and after that, we will start to recruit for posts starting afer the Halloween break.

I invite candidates who have failed to secure a post here in Ireland to email a CV directly to me (claire@uteachrecruitment.com) and Uteach will do it’s best to find you a school in England. The work is there… why not give it a go?

Interviews for September posts in England take place in Englsih schools throughout the spring - far earlier in the year than interviews in Irish schools. May and June are the busiest months for interviews, for those candidates interested in relocating.

I inform candidates of this each spring at the Teaching Fairs at Irish univeristies, in the hope that they won’t miss out on securing a full time post in England in September. Despite this, Uteach will still receive hundreds of CVs at the end of August, from candidates who chose to hold out for a post here in Ireland and unfortunatley failed to get one. August is too late for them to interview for a post in a school in England. Sadly, these candidates have missed the boat.

Each year there are talks of extra available teaching posts in Ireland and redundancies which would mean more opportunities for Irish teachers. Claims like these give hope to the thousands of unemployed Irish teachers scrambling for hours. I am certain, however, that there will not be enough posts and hours to go around and I urge Irish teachers to apply for a post in England. The jobs and the opportunities are there and hopefully in four of five years time the situation will have improved significantly here in Ireland and the situation will start to turn around. At the end of the day, it may be possible to secure a post here in Ireland for September 2010, but choosing not to apply for England and relying on this is surely a big gamble.

There is a major crisis for Irish secondary teachers in Ireland in the run up to September, as qualified teachers and those qualified from previous years scramble to secure full time posts. Uteach is inundated with CVs from teachers who are unable to find work in Ireland for September and are now thinking of relocating to England.

It’s hard to imagine that teachers who are qualifying this year from universities in Ireland will find work when they are up against those who have experience. We are being sent many CVs from teachers of subjects that are considered “shortage subjects” in England (Maths, Science or English). Many of these candidates have been teaching at their schools for three or four years and have just found out that they are not being kept on in September.

Irish teachers are indeed facing a desperate situation. It is a consolation that there are available posts in England for those willing to travel. What’s the answer to the crisis here…? Perhaps a start would be to put a cap on the ammount of teachers qualifying each year. There are at least 1500 newly qualified teachers emerging from Irish universities this year, not including those in Northern Ireland. We are working hard at the moment to ensure that all of our Irish applicants secure full time work in England for September 2010.

Maths and Science teachers are extremely scarce. Maths teachers especially, are becoming like gold dust! Teachers of subjects like Art, History, Business Studies and French are usually quite plentiful on the other hand. Many students who graduate with Science and Maths degrees seem to favour going down a route other than teaching, which is a shame as the knock on effect of this shortage will undoubtedly be a decrease in the standard of Maths and Science education in our schools. Uteach is always keen to recruit good, qualified teachers of all subjects but it’s fair to say most schools in England are crying out for Maths and Science. Is there an answer to the problem?

Uteach is just back from a trip to Canada. We attended a number of teacher recruitment fairs accross Ontario and Alberta and met some fantastic potential candidates for September 2008! Luckily the weather wasn’t too cold this time although we did have the woolies out!

Canada continues to be one of Uteach’s favourite countries to recruit teachers from. Canadian teachers have an excellent reputation in UK schools and we are looking forward to getting as many high quality teachers on board this year as possible.

We are back in Ontario and Alberta in March with Head Teachers from some of our partner schools who are very keen to meet and hire our Canadian applicants. This is a really great way for teachers to secure UK jobs as they will get to meet the Head Teachers face to face as opposed to just speaking on the phone. We look foward to our return to Canada (hopefully to warmer weather…)!

This year we are improving our services to our teachers by organising great socials events! We plan to hold a social a couple of times a term and all our teachers will be invited. Basically we will be organising a fab night out and everyone is welcome!

We reckon that our teachers would like to get to know one another and share their experiences of teaching in the UK. Settling into a new area can be a slow process and it always helps to have extra contacts and people to have a pint with! It will also be a good way for teachers to share ideas and resources.

To be invited to the socials you need only be teaching through Uteach Recruitment - we will do the rest!

This is the time of year for teachers to start worrying if they haven’t secured a teaching post for september. School starts back in just five weeks and many qualified Hdip/PGCE/PGDE graduates will be faced with “subbing” in Ireland next term. It’s a shame that so many high quality teachers are turned out in Ireland each year and the sorry truth of it is that there simply are not enough jobs for them. Teaching in the UK is a good solution for any teacher unable to find employment in Irish schools as there are still plently opportunities in teaching accross the water. Of course, if someone really doesn’t want to go abroad, there’s not much we can do to persuade them, but if someone has the slightest inclination to travel, I would really recommend trying out teaching in the UK. Uteach Recruitment helps with all aspects of relocation and job application and we also offer plently of advice on teaching over there - members of our team are teachers that have taught in England, so we know the ropes!

Uteach held two interview days recently in Ireland - 20st April in Dublin and the 21st April in Cork. They were a great success, with dozens of excellent candidates attending and being interviewed by head teachers from England. We brought the heads/deputy heads from six schools over to Ireland for the two days, each of whom had a number of positions available for september. They were delighted with the standard of the irish candidates, many of whom are still studying for their Hdip/PGDE/PGCE/BEd.

The interview days are a great way for teachers to “get their foot in the door”, as they get to meet the actual head teachers in Ireland, before heading abroad. After the interviews, Uteach gives the teachers the opportunity to go to visit and have a further interview with one or two schools. 90% of the teachers who attended the Cork or Dublin interviews were successful and over the next couple of weeks, will go to visit the schools.

Uteach are holding other interview days in Ireland this summer - get your CV in, to be considered for this great opportunity!
