Teaching in England can help you gain employment in Canada
When applying for a teaching job, you will fare much better with teaching experience rather than a period of unemployment on your resumé. Canadian teachers should consider teaching overseas and move to the UK where a surplus of teacher jobs can boost your chances of future employment. With Uteach, teaching in England can be a long or short-term career choice. Some teachers will use it as an opportunity to start a new life. Others will use it as a stepping stone to experience and, eventually, a job back in Canada.
Should you return to Canada, after teaching abroad and secure a teaching position closer to home, your UK teaching experience will allow you to benefit from a higher pay scale. Experience as a supply teacher holds no such benefits.
During your time teaching in the UK, you will also experience a whole new lifestyle and will have the opportunity to travel to many other European countries – France, Italy, Spain and more are just hours away by plane and flights are very affordable.

What are the visa options for Canadians looking to teach in the UK?
The Youth Mobility Scheme
The vast majority of Canadian teachers who move to the UK with Uteach enter through the Youth Mobility Scheme.
The scheme allows young people from Canada to enter the UK under “working holiday” status for up to two years.
The eligibility requirements for this visa specify that you must:
- Be under the age of 31 at the time of your application
- Hold a passport from Canada, Japan, Australia, New Zealand or Monaco
- Have £1,800 (approximately jQuery3,320 CAD) available in your bank account three months prior to date of travel
Find out more about application fees here.
Tier 2 Skilled Worker Visa
Due to the critical shortage of Mathematics, Physics and Chemistry teachers in the UK, teachers of these subjects are recognised as “skilled workers,” and, as such, are able to apply for a Tier 2 Skilled Worker visa if a school in the UK is willing to provide them with a certificate of sponsorship.

UK Ancestry Visa
You may be eligible to teach in the UK through a UK ancestry visa if both of the below conditions apply to you:
- You are a Commonwealth citizen (this includes Canada)
- At least one of your grandparents was born in the UK
To find out more about the UK ancestry visa, please visit the UK Border Agency’s website.
If you are fortunate enough to hold Canadian and UK dual citizenship, you do not need to apply for a visa to teach in the UK.
Teachers who hold dual citizenship between Canada and a European Union (EU) country can teach in the UK without having to apply for a visa providing that they enter the UK using their European Economic Area (EEA) passport.
Please read this article for full details on dual citizenships.
